Eating as Peacemaking?
One of the small joys in our household is using Fair Trade products which Lorie and Wilbur Wood sell after meeting once a month at West Hills Friends. Of course, I love the coffee from Mexico. My mouth is watering just thinking about the chocolate from Latin America. But what gives me special pleasure is taking the can of Palestinian olive oil out of the cupboard and pouring a small bit into a pan. As I pour, I think of the people who grew the olives, picked them while possibly being yelled at by Israeli settlers, and worked together in a co-op to press the olives for oil so they could sell it. Using this oil not only helps me make dinner, but helps Palestinian moms, dads, and children have food on their table…and ultimately helps them non-violently resist the occupation of their land.
If your meeting is interested in selling Fair Trade items, and would like to know more, feel free to contact Lorie Wood at firstname.lastname@example.org. Lorie and Wilbur Wood’s slogan sums it up, “Fair Trade: using our purchasing power for justice and hope!”
