Klamath Falls Monthly Meeting is very involved in helping alleviate food insecurity in our city. Once a month I volunteer at our church food pantry.
As with anything, the people make this interesting. Most are very grateful we are there. We are scheduled later in the day so that we can assist the working poor. There are too many in our neighborhood who don’t make enough to cover monthly expenses.
It is wonderful to be able to share food like this. It is humbling to see the gratitude on the faces of those who have had to ask for help, some for the first time.
But we give away more than food. Last fall I crocheted a bunch of hat/scarf sets, which we gave away one night. It was a special feeling to see folks wearing something I had made.
This spring, my coleus did particularly well, and we gave out starts two or three times. People are hungry for beauty as well as feed, and I love the idea that all over Klamath Falls there are coleuses brightening people’s lives. Giving a cup of cold water is good and needful, but giving beauty is just as important.
