Friends in Klamath Falls are seeking to put into practice what it means to love our neighbors. Several weeks ago we wrapped up our 4th annual garden camp for approximately 25 neighborhood children. We have partnered with the Oregon State University extension service by providing the garden space, curriculum, and teaching staff. The kids learn garden skills, such as preparing fresh produce for eating.
Great things have happened in the Friends garden besides growing delicious food and giving it away in our food pantry. Relationships have been cultivated with our neighbors. During the garden camp I went out to visit with the children and camp volunteers. Several of the campers have participated each year. One of the girls came up and gave me a great big hug and asked, “Are you going to have the harvest dinner again this year? My family really had fun last year!” Our community harvest dinner is on our calendar again for mid-October.
We have planted a few seeds and God is growing a greater awareness within our neighbors that we care about them.
