Samuel School I

Samuel School I is a spiritual retreat for seventh and eighth graders held on the second weekend in October. The location of the retreat alternates between Quaker Hill and Twin Rocks from year to year. In 2011 it will be at Quaker Hill. Students are selected by their local church elders for their openness to the Spirit and their potential leadership skills. This is not a laid back junior high retreat; instead it offers a strong challenge and spiritual development.
For more information contact Rachelle Staley at the Yearly Meeting office: 503-476-9127 or rachelle@nwfriends.org

Location: Quaker Hill Camp, McCall, Idaho
Date
: October 7-9, 2011
This year our 7th and 8th graders who were selected from across the Yearly Meeting learned new ways to hear God’s voice through various teachers from NWYM.

Here’s the Elder’s Introduction Letter and Samuel School I Selection Guidelines (in PDF format) which explains the conference and selection process for sending middle school youth to Samuel School I.

After the elders’ have discerned and selected which youth to participate in this year’s SSI please send in the Registration Form (in PDF format) to the NWYM with the registration fee.  Please send in the registrations with payment and Eli information by September 23, 2011.

After the youth have been selected please send this Letter to Student and Parents as well as the Eli Introduction Letter to the selected Elis.

All youth who attend will need to bring the Medical Release Form upon arrival to Quaker Hill.

Check-in and registration begins at 5 p.m. at Quaker Hill on Friday, Oct. 7. The program will conclude promptly at noon on Oct. 9. Unfortunately, we will not be able to check-in any students before 5 p.m. so please do not come to camp before 5 p.m. on Friday.

Samuel School II

This retreat is designed to further develop spiritual sensitivity and leadership abilities of high school students. Workshops, stretching activities such as a high ropes course and extended solo time, and journal activities combine to challenge youth to help nurture a Christ-centered lifestyle. Samuel School II (SSII) occurs during Memorial Day weekend, alternating between Oregon and Idaho. Our next SSII will be held May 25-28, 2012, at Camp Tilikum in Newberg, Oregon.

Samuel School II 2012 forms and registration will be available this spring!

Bible Quizzing

This activity involves four tournaments taking place across the Northwest. These tournaments narrow competition to three teams and individual high scorers. Teams are quizzed on their knowledge of one or more books of the Bible throughout the four tournaments. Adaptable for large or small churches. Bible Quizzing encourages study and memorization, as well as fellowship and friendly competition. The tournaments are held November through March.

Youth Challenge

Youth Challenge is an umbrella program designed to give supervision to various summer trips sponsored by NWYM Young Adult Leadership Training (YAF LDT). Each trip emphasizes a specific opportunity for service and growth. Two programs are currently active:

YCEW- Youth Challenged to Expand their Worldview: A Christ-centered missions and service trip to a cross cultural destination. The primary focus is on personal and spiritual development of team members as they minister and serve in another culture. The team travels and serves from mid-June through July, and they report back at Yearly Meeting.

When: Summer 2012
Where: Haiti
Who: High school sophomores, juniors or seniors for the 2011-2012 school year
What: Working alongside in-country missionaries, working with those marginalized in Haiti

Visit the YCEW page for more information or to apply for the 2012 trip.

Important note:  YCEW will take a sabbatical year during the summer of 2013 and not sponsor a trip.

YCLS - Youth Challenged through Local Service is a short-term inner city mission for youth, in partnership with BridgeTown Ministries. This experience takes youth into some of the neediest areas of Portland to serve those who have been marginalized by our society today.

Dates:  June 20-26 in Portland, Oregon and Youth Yearly Meeting at George Fox University, July 24-29, 2011.

Click HERE to apply online (all applications are confidentially sent to the selection team). The program cost is $550 to cover both the cost of the YCLS program and the week of Youth Yearly Meeting (all lodging and meals included).  Application deadline is May 1, 2011.

There is also a need for two adult team leaders to volunteer during the week of YCLS.  These leaders will work alongside BridgeTown ministries and the YCLS team members during this important week in Portland, Oregon.

The one week summer service experience in Portland is for those in high school. Contact Rachelle Staley, Associate Superintendant of Youth and Young Adults, if you have questions about being a leader or team member, Rachelle@nwfriends.org or 503/476-9127.
