COURSE TITLE: CHTH 564 History and Polity of the Quaker Movement

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course offers an overview of the Quaker movement from the 17th century to the present. It focuses on the characteristics, beliefs, and practices that give Quakerism its unique identity. Key writings, leaders, and contributions to Christian thought and practice are considered. The course is designed especially for those seeking to pursue ministry with evangelical Friends.

COURSE TITLE: PSTD 585 Friendly Persuasion: The Art of Quaker Pastoring

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Are Quaker pastors just like pastors of other traditions in their core responsibilities? This course answers that question by exploring how Friends when most faithful to their spiritual roots and core convictions may very well function differently than other pastors in the conduct of worship, spiritual formation, visitation, counseling, business meetings, and leadership.

Summer 2012

COURSE TITLE:  SFAD 585  Congregational Discernment

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Across the denominations, theologies and polities, there is a growing hunger to find ways to listen to God and be faithful to God’s leadings. Christian leaders are catching a vision that group discernment is an integral congregational skill for empowered work of the church. Quakers (Friends) have been utilizing group discernment as the basis of decision making for over 350 years. Through this Institute, their perspective and practice of listening to God in community are offered as gift to the broader Christian community.

The Leadership Institute for Group Discernment is a four-day intensive experience to empower church leaders in group discernment. It will integrate theological, spiritual and practical organizational processes. Each participant is invited to bring both expertise to share and problems to be solved.
