September 12-14, 2011

Hood River, OR

Honing our Craft:
Self-Care, Wholeness and Freedom

“Preaching is to pastoral ministry what the paring knife is to the kitchen. The best steel loses its edge when driven against cutting board, bone and peach pit. The sermon is a tool for proclamation of divine revelation in a sin hardened world. It too loses its edge. The aim of 2011 pastors Focus Conference is to help you sharpen your preaching. Pastors from NWYM will share a variety of preaching styles and will engage in conversation over how to use these styles.

An 1877 lecture by Phillip Brooks, one of America’s best known 19th century pastors reminds us why we need to sharpen the sermon, “for a good sermon there must be [someone] who can speak well, whose nature stands in right relations to these to whom [they] speak, who has brought [their] life close to theirs with sympathy. The same reason which requires a … preacher at all requires as wise and strong and well furnished, as skillful and as eloquent a [person] as can be found or made. The study of language and of oratory . . . are noble when you undertake them in order that your tongue may be a worthier minister of God’s truth. He who knew what was in the heart of [people] spake as never [any person] spake.” [replacements for gender inclusivity]
