Short Term Outreach

May Trip to China

Dates: May 2-24, 2012

Our drive to accomplish or “do” something is admirable. It is a common trait for Americans! On the other hand it can get us into trouble. What if we went on a trip to begin to learn how to simply “be” with a particular people in their context?

That’s what we want to attempt. This spring, a team of 12-16 young adults plan to visit 3 locations in China. There may be some “up front” time, and we will see some sites, but mostly we want to find ways to be with and make new Chinese friends. An occasional English lesson, a softball game, some side-by-side service, are just a few of the ways we hope to interact. But listening will be our primary task. Listening to our hosts, listening as God speaks to us about our experience, to each other, and to our own assumptions and expectations along this journey.

Prayer Journeys

In short-term service we often focus on work-projects, evangelism, or discipleship. What if the focus were on prayer? Prayer Journeys are an experience in communal prayerwalking through various global areas of need. The idea is to talk and walk in direct relationship to God, interceding and seeking God’s heart and plan for the people and places visited. It is praying in the places where we expect our prayers to be answered. Prayer Teams are made up of individuals sent out from NWYM to participate in intercessory prayer as a short-term (usually 2 week) team. Prayer journeys focus time and energy on intercession for unreached people and places, while providing encouragement and prayer on-site for the protection and strengthening of existing churches and believers. These journeys also have a long-term strategic role in achieving the Global Outreach vision by building relationships in countries that teams visit and praying that friends and families in those places come to know Jesus Christ.
