Good Listening: our Superintendent Search

Tom Stave is the clerk of NWYM, and a member of Eugene Friends.

Our yearly meeting has begun the search for a new superintendent, as Colin has accepted the position of general secretary of Friends United Meeting, to begin January 2012.  We release Colin with our blessings to a new chapter in his ministry, while recognizing that a chapter begins for Northwest Yearly Meeting as well. How shall we approach this together?

I used to listen to a radio program called “Adventures in Good Listening.” This phrase appeals to me as a description of the life together that Friends aspire to: listening carefully and intentionally to God, sharing what we hear with each other, and then going out faithfully to obey what we have learned.

Let’s practice good listening in several ways. Will you make opportunities to pray in gathered meetings and privately for the discernment of the search committee, the Administrative Council, and the yearly meeting? Will you seek Christ’s leading for NWYM about his direction at this moment in our story? Will you intercede for those persons who may be weighing a call to serve? Will you pray that in this listening we may be bound more closely together in the love of our Lord Jesus Christ?

As you begin to listen, read about the search process at http://nwfriends.org/search, and share what you’ve heard at search@nwfriends.org. You can call me at 541-914-8721, or contact other search committee members: Leroy Benham, Wess Daniels, Sharon Hayden, Faith Marsalli, Jay Miller, Jennifer Perez, Vic Peterson, and Alan Weinacht. The closing date for applications is February 28.

    Search committee,

May God bless you and give His discernment as you listen to those who have opened themselves to the possibility of giving leadership to NWYM. It is a large task and responsibility you have embarked upon, yet what a joy to see God’s hand lead and guide.
