Reflections on the current situation in Egypt

by Allyn and Holly Dhynes, West Hills Friends A teeming Cairo with all its traffic, commotion, and dusty air has long been considered a place of refuge for my wife and I during our work in the Middle East.  But for the majority of its residents its harsh, degrading, and deprived conditions have taken its [...]

Abhor Evil!

By Patrick Neifert We know we’re supposed to hate what is evil, but is it really true of us on a daily basis at a deep soul level? It seems the word hate no longer means much to us. We use it in so many different ways that don’t truly reflect its meaning. We often use the word with about as much emotion as is required to order a pizza. “I hate asparagus; I hate today’s high gas prices; I hate it when I’m already late for work and can’t find my car keys.”

Why?

By Ken Magee and Karen Oberst, Klamath Falls We find ourselves making connections with others as we reach out to our neighborhood. As stated, the garden camp was in partnership with the OSU extension office. The PALM (Provide A Loving Meal) dinner we sponsor once a month is in conjunction with the Methodist church and others. Dragonfly Transitions, a home for young adults struggling with the transition to healthy, productive independence, picks up and delivers the food to our food pantry from the food bank.

Keeping Current with Global Outreach

Since this issue of Connection is themed around the topics of stewardship and simplicity, I wondered what particular impact living in another country has on these issues. So I asked some questions of our overseas workers. Below are a few of their responses. Remember to pray for all our workers as they wrestle each day [...]

Keeping Current: Poor Me… and You

By Shawn McConaughey ~ NWYM Superintendent of Global Outreach and Pastoral Care “The way we understand the nature of poverty and what causes poverty is very important, because it tends to determine how we respond to poverty” (Bryant L. Myers, Walking with the Poor, p. 12) One of the fundamental shifts I’ve been experiencing the [...]

Keeping Current: Giving a Hand Up

“To some people I would be a throw away,” Debra says. “But you do need me.” Among her repertoire of drugs were meth and ecstasy. Four years in juvenile detention for assault. Gangs. Trafficking women in prostitution. But don’t mistake Debra’s comment as arrogance. It is, instead, proof that she believes in forgiveness and restoration. [...]
