Keeping Current with Local Outreach-Servanthood

Gar and Vicki

By Gar Mickelson As I was growing up (spiritually speaking) my pastor would often use the phrase “We are working our way up to servanthood.” This saying had a tremendous impact on my life because it invited me to live life with a radically different perspective. Instead of a self-referenced perspective, this shifted my focus to those around me and challenged me to see myself as their servant. Read the rest of Gar’s challenge.

Table 01

About a year ago during one of our stewardship meetings we were sharing ideas on how to serve God through our community. Then Cindy and Ben Jury shared about a meal program feeding a nearby neighborhood. Filed Under: Articles and Newsletters, Connection, Local Voices

Keeping Current with Local Outreach ~ Rose Valley

Rose Valley Food Bin

At the start of each season, the young players from the Rose Valley Friends Church basketball program concentrate on more than dribbling and slam dunks. The hoopsters also take time to raise food for charity. This year’s recipient was FISH of Cowlitz County. FISH works with 18 churches in Longview and Kelso to distribute food each weekday. In a typical month, 1,700 people—adults and children—receive food boxes from FISH churches. Many people get food two or three times a month. In 2005, FISH gave out enough food to prepare more than 250,000 meals. Read more about how Rose Valley impacted their community.

Anthem Friends Update

Anthem Friends on a Sunday evening

Anthem Friends is one of our newest church plants, springing out of a group that has been running “Boarders for Christ” (BFC) for a number of years. BFC is a ministry to skate and snowboarders that begin in Couer d’Alene, Idaho and spread to several chapters nationally. As the leadership desired a greater sense of worship and stability for their growing families, a worship group formed and they connected with NWYM, planting Anthem Friends. Recovering Freedom in Christ

Shawn Leonard

Mountain Ministries, located just outside of Kelso, WA., is a one-year discipleship program designed to lead a person from a life of drugs and alcohol to a life committed to serving Jesus Christ. With a 70% success rate, Mountain Ministries shows that Jesus Christ is the answer to drugs, alcohol, and other forms of addiction. Gary and Fay Miller, the executive directors, have dedicated their home, property, money and time to “the Mountain” because of the call God put on their lives. I have seen lives restored…lives that were once on the road to death. Even the animals seem to become healthy. It is a very challenging area to serve, but can also produce the greatest rewards. God loves to restore people’s lives and relationships. God is a God of restoration.
