WEEK 7: Practicing listening prayer
Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). You are encouraged to make time today for an extended period of still and silent prayer. How long? As a suggestion, spend as many minutes in prayer as you are in years. If you’re 18 years old, spend at least 18 minutes in prayer; if you’re 70, you get to spend 70 minutes with the Lord!
Listening Prayer departs from traditional prayer by listening from the heart and letting God speak rather than dictating our own requests to God from our own thoughts. Listening Prayer has no need to plead or convince God to answer because it starts by seeking agreement with heaven before speaking.
In Traditional prayer we bring our needs and requests to God in hope that God will answer. In silent prayer, however, one humbly steps back and allows God’s will be done by taking time to listen and basing prayer content on what is heard or seen.
This prayer is very sacrificial, it can even feel like wasting time, it can feel like it does not “achieve” anything, and you don’t get anything out of it. There is neither a “good” prayer period nor a “bad” prayer period. Whether there are few or many distractions is irrelevant. This is prayer stripped to its naked essentials: faith and intention. Prayer at its simplest.
