WEEK 6: Practicing the presence of God
When we live out of the realization that God is all around us all the time, we will live differently than those who do not recognize this. God wants you to recognize him in everything, in every person that you come into contact with, and even in the mundane.
This week’s challenge will help you practice the presence of God. Let’s call it “unexpected prayers”. Author and journalist Philip Yancey gives us a good idea of what these prayers might look like. “The job of a journalist is, simply, to see. We are professional eyes. As a Christian journalist, I have learned to look for traces of God. God is already present in the most unexpected places. We just need to make him visible.”
As you begin each morning this week ask God to show up in an unexpected place in your day, and to help you see him there. In this journal, or a separate paper keep track of these “God sightings”. My guess is that once you start looking for God he is going to show up in a lot of unexpected places.
Earth’s crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God;
But only he who sees, takes off his shoes –
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.
