NWYM 2007 – Sunday Evening keynote address – July 22, 2007

July 23, 2007

¡Buenas tardes, Amigos!

Now, that is as much Spanish as I will attempt this evening. Unfortunately, I am like most people born & raised in the US & only know one language. Sort of sad, isn’t it? I’m pretty positive we won’t be speaking English in heaven…& if I have as much trouble learning that language as I have others…I am going to miss out on a whole bunch of announcements at least early on. I can see it now…I’ll be the only “lost” guy wandering around heaven…

Doing well…by Doing Good

July 3, 2007

Do you have an IRA? If you’re like many Americans you do.

An IRA is a wonderful and popular retirement planning tool, but was never intended to be a good asset for your heirs to inherit when you pass away. Why? Because for most people IRAs will be income taxed when your heirs receive it.

So how can you avoid having your retirement account taxed heavily when you pass away? Consider a Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) as part of your estate plan! This unique and powerful tool can protect your heirs from paying significant income taxes upfront. It will also ensure that they receive this part of your inheritance in a controlled fashion over a period of years.

If you would like more information about this particular strategy, or assistance with your overall estate planning, call Dave Hampton at 503-538-9419.

Why We Meet – Colin

July 3, 2007

Over the next several months, I will focus this space on exploring our identity as NWYM Friends. A clear message communicated throughout the vision and long-range planning process emphasized our need to relearn and reclaim our identity as Christ-centered Friends. Together, we believe we have something significant to offer the world as we are faithful to our particular calling as Jesus’ people.

Some of you may not know this, but NWYM has one of the longer Yearly Meeting sessions among any group of current Friends. I know this because I have attended other yearly meetings and because I get ribbed about it a good bit by other Friends superintendents and secretaries. There is one who especially likes to remind me HOW LONG we meet. In response, I’ve encouraged him to simply install a drive-up window for Friends in their Yearly Meeting…since they gather for such a brief amount of time.

Roberts’ Reflections – Out of the Depths

July 3, 2007

Psalm 130 is one of the most poignant of all. You may not be in a down mood now, but you have been, or will be, or know folks who are. So recite it with me:

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities. (NRSV)

C.E. Grant

July 2, 2007

The NWYM Board of Christian Education and Discipleship, allocates a portion of our budget for grants in the amount of $250 to aid local churches in their education program. This grant should go towards supplies, equipment, facilities, or teacher training that will improve the Christian education of children and/or adults in the local church bodies. These grants are for matching funds, so local church bodies will be stimulated to give an equal amount.
